New Podcast is Up

Well, this morning was a morning of reflection and soul searching- true soul searching. Especially when I found a bit of prose by my friend Andrea Dean Van Scoyoc The title of the prose found in her book Strange Brew is called “I haven’t Changed” as I read it because I was looking for something to grab each of you for my newest podcast, it hit me. This described me to a T. I have changed – I have changed and morphed in ways I did not fully realize. Talking about the lightbulb going off over my head. So that bit of prose became the basis for my podcast “Change Within Ourself” – You see if we don’t change and grow especially after a loss, then we stagnate and die. So I am going to give you a direct link to this podcast and get you to listen, please leave comments- I love feedback on my podcasts- since it is not live radio- I don’t know what you all are thinking. Here is the link, check it out it is downloadable and sharable. It is also on itunes and should be on stitcher, if you have it. That is if they haven’t screwed it up like they did several of my podcasts. Maybe they will get their act together and fix it soon. Anyway, I got off track, here is the link please go and listen, share and keep sharing. Change is not always a bad thing. Change Within Yourself

It Is Almost The Silly Season

It is almost that time of year where we rack our brains to spend thousands of dollars on things that we think our loved ones will enjoy. After a time that chore becomes almost unbearable. So, with that in mind I am going to help you out a bit. Books are a wonderful source of entertainment and education. No, really even fiction books can and are educational. A writer worth their salt will through in things that are real, for instance Tim Dorsey who writes about my favorite serial killer Serge Storm writes about all things Florida in his over the top comedy books. He travels all over Florida to out of the way places for information for his character Serge and his sidekick Coleman.

Dan Brown who wrote Inferno, the DiVinci Code and other books also adds real places and history to his work. And of course my favorite Ann Rice fills her books with all things New Orleans. This is just three of the authors I read that I never fail to learn something from when I read their works. So with that in mind, I am going to pimp a few of my books which includes real places and even history. First off, my latest release
The Mad Hatter released this year. It has not yet appeared in print on Amazon but you can find it at Lulu.com just click on the title above this sentence. It can also be found on Amazon on kindle The Mad Hatter
It is filled with the history of Whitechapel and the crimes of Jack the Ripper even though he may or may not be the principle character.
Now if you are looking for something a bit more sinister check out Brilliant Insanity the places in the book are Savannah and Fort Pierce, Fl.
If you live or have lived in Jackson Co Ga or Jackson Co Alabama you will enjoy my book Tangled Minds

I also have a series that I co- authored with my friend Andrea Dean Van Scoyoc which are comedies – yes I write all genres, check out When Fates Collide set in Key West – When Fates Collide Mardi Gras Bound of course it is set in New Orleans and When Fates Collide Arm Candy set in St Marteen which is in the islands. In the same comedy genre I have The Pink Canary also set in Key West

Now if you are a true crime buff and are prepared to read facts not fluff check out Silent Scream This book is about the victims of Florida’s first serial killer Gerard Schaefer. It is not for the faint of heart – it is raw and brutal just like the murders. So if you don’t have a stomach for facts instead of fluff I do not recommend this book. My second true crimes is The Last Rites this was also a very brutal murder in Fort Pierce, Florida the victims Pauline Metler was raped and executed. Again if you want fluff do not buy this book – it is also raw and brutal.

If you are looking for inspiration well you have come to the right place, Pennies From Heaven no this is not a how to book on dealing with grief. It is however, the stories of others who have dealt with death and grief. It is a book that was written to show how others dealt with death and that grief is personal, there is no set time to grieve, nor is there any set way to grieve. It is a book to help bring comfort and peace.
Then I have Dream Catcher Failure Was Never an Option The true story of a man who is handicapped who has succeeded because of his handicap not in spite of them. He has used his handicap to be unique as we all should. In this world we are all handicapped in some way. It is up to us to succeed by trying instead of saying I can’t and failing.
Now if you like anthologies filled with horror I have those as well. Welcome to Your Nightmare Satan’s Holiday A Merry Scary Christmas all of these anthologies are filled to the brim with short stories, flash fiction and and poems by several different authors.

Then I have historical fiction. I know. Isn’t this great? One stop shopping for all those on your list. Check it out A Voice From the Grave All of my books are downloadable on both kindle and Nook and they are all in print form. Some of them are audible as well. There is no reason not to by my books. I have made it so easy for you. There is something for everyone. And just to add to the mix you can find me on facebook at Yvonne Mason or just google me. I am all over the net.
May the holidays find you happy, healthy and safe. Love yourself, and each other. Hold the memories tight because one day that will be all you have.

Before One Takes Jabs One Should Stop and Think!

There is an author friend of mine who has written several books, this is a dream she has had for a long time. However, as things go life got in the way and she ended up with some health issues. One of those health issues was brain damage. However, this has not deterred her from her dream. Now, with that being said, one of her books received a very nasty review and then a nasty comment. After reading the review and the comment, I decided it was time to stand in front her her bullets and taken them for her.
First of all we never know what battles someone is fighting. So we should always season our speech with a little salt. Next. The review was not a review. It was a critique and not a very good one at that. Second the snarky comment that was made was totally uncalled for and hurtful. Reviews are not supposed to be personal – it was a double whammy as the review was personal and the comment was personal. A good reviewer would have discussed the storyline, not the author. I have ordered this book, I will indeed read it. For those of you who have never put pen to paper – you have no idea how hard it is – as for the publisher who published this book. Well, Author House is a vanity press, They do not edit. Sadly, most indie authors, especially those who have never published before do no understand the snake pit that vanity presses are. They take your money and give nothing in return. They do not edit, nor do they market, they just put the book to print and make you sign a contract for seven years and then if you want the copywrite back you have to pay them a huge amount of money. So, Ms. Merenda, if you would like to help this author, how about offering your editing services for free. How about encouraging her instead of discouraging her. My question to you is – Do you have dreams? Has anyone tried to steal them from you?
That is exactly what you are doing to this author. You are trying to destroy her dream simply because you simply don’t know how to write a non personal review. Nor do you offer your help to a woman who is trying to live her dream with a challenge.

Now on to the comment that someone named “Dest” – Yeah, I know who names their child Dest. Anyway, here is the comment “A great review, hit the nail on the head. I haven’t read the whole book, but the excerpt alone was disgusting enough. This book is beyond lazily written, it makes no sense at all, just like every other Jean Marie book. But that’s the charm of her writings, they provide endless hours of entertainment!”

Dest, this is for you. Shame one you. Taking cheap shots is not classy at all. If you didn’t read the book and just read the excerpt, well, you have no idea if you will like it or not. And to make such sarcastic remarks at this author’s expense says quite about about your character. Not in a good way.

A very wise woman once told me that when we open our minds to what we read, it is amazing at what we might learn. Never read a book with a closed mind, it does two things, it keeps one ignorant and it makes them look stupid when they try to write reviews. These two people did not write reviews, they wrote garbage.

I for one, who has a brother who has brain damage applaud this author for her courage, her character and her grit. She may never sell thousands of dollars worth of books, she may never find herself on the best seller list, but let me tell you this, she is successful because she did it. That cannot be said for the two people who wrote this dribble – which this author should not even concern herself with. It shows their small minds and their even small character.

My challenge to all who read this post is to order her book, read it with an open mind, learn something new and encourage her to dream and live that dream. That takes character.

More like “NIGHTMARE OF A BOOK”
By Merenda on September 6, 2009
Format: Paperback
I had interest in the book… until I read the excerpt given. At first glance, this books storyline had a lot of promise. However, just reading the excerpt, it’s very, VERY novice. I don’t think Ive ever read a book that made sure that every word is written out completely. Such as this comment made by one of the police officers: “Sir, we are done here, so we will meet back at police headquarters. We will discuss how and when the murders occurred. We have killers on our hands; we must find them or they will strike again”. Seriously? The sentence could have read ” Sir, we’re done, we’re gonna head back to the office, and go over the facts and evidence we have, and see where to go from there”. It’s like a sixth grader wrote this. I have never seen so many run on sentences, over extended uses of words, drawn out conclusions with having a shred of conclusive information, and yet, also trying to pound in the story so fast as to kill 6 people, vaguely, in 5 pages. The whole story is basically done right there. except, the oh so smart police officers talking back at “police headquarters” about the when, why, what time, and knowledge of more then one killer BEFORE ever making it out of the victim’s house. I don’t even know what story is left anyway? All the promise in the description went out the window with the killing of all the subjects mentioned, in those 5 first pages. And, I’m not even a person who really cares about some errors in grammar or bad editing of a book .But, this one was just soooo bad.

And, let’s not forget, teenagers do not “act” or speak the way these girls did, before they we’re quickly, raped, and murdered. There was no precursor leading up to the killer’s arrival. Nothing that said the men crept out in the bushes watching the house for hours. Waiting to make their move. Nope, they simply came on in behind the girl and her dog. What made this girl so suspicious of a car parked outside? Isn’t that a normal thing? I mean I don’t walk outside my house, see a car, and run back in, scared to death that the boogeyman’s coming. This is just so, so poorly written. I say stick to your day job. because if this kind of “writing” can be published, then I know I can make millions writing books at will no matter how badly written they are. LOL

This could’ve been a great story. But, it has all the irritating marks of a person trying too hard to tell the story that it loses the punch before it can be poured in the glass. My 15 year old son can write better then this. I don’t pretend to be perfect with my writing or grammar. But, I’m also not an “author” and I’m not expected to be “perfect” in that area of getting a story across. The publishers missed the mark on this one. I can’t even fathom how there are several mis-spellings in the book description alone. It amazes me how lazy this whole thing appears to have been written. I say skip it. Save the $10.00 plus dollars for a solidly written and grammatically proficient book.

Who You Are!

As most of you know I am an author and have over 17 published works. It has not been an easy journey, but then anything that is worthwhile is not an easy journey, if it were then everyone would do it. That being said, I want you to listen to my latest podcast.I watched a video of a young man by the name of Jordan Smith who is a contestant on this season’s The Voice. He performed a song titled “Who You Are” when he was finished he was in tears. The reason is simple, when asked he stated that he was finally able to say he was okay with who he was. The lyrics to this song are very true. In my podcast I talk about the lyrics and how true they are.
As humans we do not always accept who we are. We can be our own worst critic. I know I was for years. I tired to be all things to all people and in the process lost myself. When I finally woke up and and understood that I had to be true to myself and if others refused to accept that, then it was on them and not me.
So, for all of you out there who are afraid to be true to yourself, understand you cheat yourself and you can never live up to the expectations of others, because it will destroy you. I know I have been there.
So take a listen to this podcast, it is downloadable so you can share. https://soundcloud.com/bestsellingauthoryvonnema/who-you-are

Bullying It is Time to Stop IT!!!!!

Yesterday I did a radio show in Cocoa, Fl with Seeta and Friends, the theme of the show was bullying and the consequences and how to stop it.  You can listen to the show here Seeta and Friends  today I followed up with a podcast which can also be found on itunes under Author Yvonne Mason. You can listen here Bestselling Author Yvonne Mason  In this podcast I read a poem written by my friend Andrea Van Scoyoc who produces her own podcast via video under The Dark Apostle’s Bewitching Hour and she also has  videos on you tube under Andrea Dean Van Scoyoc

Now  that I have shown the love, let’s continue on this journey – Bullying steals 4,000 lives per year in children. That is way to many. To add to that for every successful suicide there are 100 attempts that are not successful.

We are losing our children at an alarming rate because of bullying. We as parents don’t always see the signs of either the person who bullies or the child who is bullied because they hide it so well. Many times parents of bullies are bullies themselves. It is a learned behavior- children are not born bullies. We have to get to the core of the problem in order to stop this epidemic. It takes a village to raise a child and it takes a village to stop the bullies. Children who are bullies grow up to be adults who are bullies which translates into domestic abuse and workplace abuse- The cycle never stops it continues for generations.

If you have a teen or know of a teen or anyone who is being bullied or is a bully check out this site. It is filled with so much information. Taylor4teens

“Your Value Does Not decrease based on someone’s inability to see your worth.” Words to live by and to teach our young.

Bullying and Suicide

There is a strong link between bullying and suicide, as suggested by recent bullying-related suicides in the US and other countries. Parents, teachers, and students learn the dangers of bullying and help students who may be at risk of committing suicide.

In recent years, a series of bullying-related suicides in the US and across the globe have drawn attention to the connection between bullying and suicide. Though too many adults still see bullying as “just part of being a kid,” it is a serious problem that leads to many negative effects for victims, including suicide. Many people may not realize that there is also a link between being a bully and committing suicide.

The statistics on bullying and suicide are alarming:

  • Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people, resulting in about 4,400 deaths per year, according to the CDC. For every suicide among young people, there are at least 100 suicide attempts. Over 14 percent of high school students have considered suicide, and almost 7 percent have attempted it.
  • Bully victims are between 2 to 9 times more likely to consider suicide than non-victims, according to studies by Yale University
  • A study in Britain found that at least half of suicides among young people are related to bullying
  • 10 to 14 year old girls may be at even higher risk for suicide, according to the study above
  • According to statistics reported by ABC News, nearly 30 percent of students are either bullies or victims of bullying, and 160,000 kids stay home from school every day because of fear of bullying

Bully-related suicide can be connected to any type of bullying, including physical bullying, emotional bullying, cyberbullying, and sexting, or circulating suggestive or nude photos or messages about a person.

Some schools or regions have more serious problems with bullying and suicide related to bullying. This may be due to an excessive problem with bullying at the school. It could also be related to the tendency of students who are exposed to suicide to consider suicide themselves.

Some of the warning signs of suicide can include:

  • Showing signs of depression, like ongoing sadness, withdrawal from others, losing interest in favorite activities, or trouble sleeping or eating
  • Talking about or showing an interest in death or dying
  • Engaging in dangerous or harmful activities, including reckless behavior, substance abuse, or self injury
  • Giving away favorite possessions and saying goodbye to people
  • Saying or expressing that they can’t handle things anymore
  • Making comments that things would be better without them

If a person is displaying these symptoms, talk to them about your concerns and get them help right away, such as from a counselor, doctor, or at the emergency room.

In some cases, it may not be obvious that a teen is thinking about suicide, such as when the suicide seems to be triggered by a particularly bad episode of bullying. In several cases where bullying victims killed themselves, bullies had told the teen that he or she should kill him or herself or that the world would be better without them. Others who hear these types of statements should be quick to stop them and explain to the victim that the bully is wrong.

Other ways to help people who may be considering suicide include:

  • Take all talk or threats of suicide seriously. Don’t tell the person they are wrong or that they have a lot to live for. Instead, get them immediate medical help.
  • Keep weapons and medications away from anyone who is at risk for suicide. Get these items out of the house or at least securely locked up.
  • Parents should encourage their teens to talk about bullying that takes place. It may be embarrassing for kids to admit they are the victims of bullying, and most kids don’t want to admit they have been involved in bullying. Tell victims that it’s not their fault that they are being bullied and show them love and support. Get them professional help if the bullying is serious.
  • It is a good idea for parents to insist on being included in their children’s friends on social networking sites so they can see if someone has posted mean messages about them online. Text messages may be more difficult to know about, so parents should try to keep open communications with their children about bullying.
  • Parents who see a serious bullying problem should talk to school authorities about it, and perhaps arrange a meeting with the bully’s parents. More states are implementing laws against bullying, and recent lawsuits against schools and criminal charges against bullies show that there are legal avenues to take to deal with bullies. If school authorities don’t help with an ongoing bullying problem, local police or attorneys may be able to.

People who are thinking about suicide should talk to someone right away or go to an emergency room. They can also call a free suicide hotline, such as 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

Friends and relatives of suicide victims also need to find someone to talk to as they grieve, especially if they are suffering from depression or suicidal thoughts themselves.

Promoting Is The Key

For those of you who know me, you know that I loved promoting other artists. It doesn’t matter the art form, whether it is music, the written word or art. To me they are all artists and worthy of promoting. I am successful because I do promote them. Because, you see it makes them successful. It becomes quid pro quo- that is Latin for something for something (loosely translated) – Anyway, back to my promoting others.

One of my fellow authors, who I have loved and known for about ten years has taken her talents and put them to use in another direction. You see she now longer publishes books, but she does one better, she publishes videos. She has The Dark Apostle’s Bewitching Hour on facebook and she has her you tube site under Andrea Dean Van Scoyoc  where you can see her Noir silent film titled The Journey  You want to like her page Cafe Noir Productions You never know what she is going to film next!!!!!!

You can also catch all of her Friday fright videos like the one from today which is the conclusion of last week’s short story.  See I even made it easy for you I posted both right here. You have to go show her some love and you must repost this post. She is so deserving of your souls!!!!!  Every Friday morning at 8:00 AM  she post another episode on her Andrea Dean Van Scoyoc and on The Dark Apostle’s Bewitching Hour
