I am Taking a Page from The Late Steve Jobs

It took me a long 34 years to learn this lesson that Steve Jobs lived. He Said, “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.”

So many of us live our life this way and we lose our precious time so that at the end we say, “shoulda, coulda, woulda.”
I have given many workshops and motivational speeches about living one’s dream and I still run across the one person in the room who says, ” I am waiting for….” Really! Why?

If we spend our time waiting for the right moment, the right place, the right time, the right agent, the right publisher, the right audience, the right book , the right story, the perfect market, then we lose so much. We live someone else’s dream.

If we spend our time listening to others tell us that we can never fulfill our dream, that we will never sell the first book, that we don’t have a worthwhile story, then we are living someone else’s dream. If we let self doubt to creep into our dream then we are living someone else’s dream.

If we believe that just because we don’t have a degree in writing, or literature that we can’t write then we are living someone else’s dream.

Steve Jobs called it the dogma of being trapped by living with the results of other people’s thinking. Of allowing the opinions of other people drown out your dreams and inner voice. He also said to have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. Everything else is secondary.

This is so very true. He also stated that we are all going to die, so we are already naked, so to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose, take the high road and think about what all you have to gain. Go for your dream. Had Steve Jobs not believed in his dream we would not have the wonderful technology we have today.
I would not be a best selling author. I would not have the technology I do to promote my work, much less publish it.
I had a dream and I am living it. Don’t become your own worst enemy by living in the shadows – by listening to those who would discourage you. They are afraid to move into the light. They are jealous that you have a dream. They refuse to follow their heart and intuition. Don’t become their victim.
Take a page from Steve Jobs and look in the mirror and ask yourself this question, “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” If the answer is no then it is time to make a change.
