Award Winning Best Selling Florida Author Yvonne Mason

My Books, writing tips and reviews

What Has Happened to Mainstream Publishing?

Even though I am an author my husband and I are both avid readers. Avid as in almost insane readers. However, what we have found here lately is that we are running out of books to read by our favorite “traditional” authors. They are not producing books like they used to. My question is why? This is the time of year that books should be being released like mad ahead of the silly season also known as Christmas.

But they are not out there. It is like they have gone underground. I don’t know what is happening. I do know that more and more indies are blooming and I am loving it.

Traditional houses and all that goes with it including agents, etc for so many years has dictated what we as readers can read and what authors can write and how much of it they can write that the market is flooded with the same story line, the same characters and the same dialogue all under a different title. Are we getting smarter as readers or are we just getting bored. Frankly I am the later. Which is a shame because I at one time looked forward to the latest release by many of my favorite traditional authors. Now not so much. They are in a box and must write what they are told. That is sad. Now they are running out of ideas, characters and plots. They are not allowed to use their natural talent to explode with new ideas. They have to crank out books like they are machines and then they are ripped by the houses to nothing. Greed comes into play here. Not on the author’s part but on the part of the houses – Such a shame. We are losing authors to death every day and we are losing their talent along with it.

I have taken a step back and have stopped reading those authors that I once enjoyed- they have become boring. I would rather spend my time watching paint dry as to read some of their books. I know they are better than what they are putting out there- but alas they are not allowed to step out of the box –

I am turning more and more to those authors who are not so well known- you know those hated indie authors- yea those who make the traditional houses cringe. The reason is simple they don’t have to work inside a box, in fact they don’t know what a box is. They write from the heart not the pocket book.

So if you are as tired as I am of reading the same old thing- of knowing the end before you get through the first chapter- then look up some indie authors you might find that you have discovered diamonds that you didn’t know were out there.

Yes, we do exist and we are not going anywhere except up. We might not get rich and from the looks of it neither are the mainstream authors, but we do know how to pack a punch in our books. We know how to keep the reader turning that page wondering if they have the correct ending in their head and then finding out no they didn’t. So if you like me are sick of the same old thing and want to titillate your mind then check out indie authors. You won’t be sorry.

Satan’s Holiday is Getting a Companion Book (You Want to Be a Part of This)

satans holiday

That’s right you heard it here first. I am going where no one has gone before – well because that is what I do. Due to the overwhelming response yesterday to my blog about Satan’s Holiday and the controversy behind it – the opposite of what many thought would happen has happened. The response was so positive and so many people wanted to be a part of it that we decided to add a second book. That’s right I have enough short stories, poems and flash fiction coming in and people wanted to contribute that we are adding a second book. I have extended the deadline to September 20th for those who wish to contribute.

The title is still top secret- But I will say this my cover designer’s son has given me another great title. He is only 13 years old but the talent of this young man in knowing what I need is beyond belief. He gets kudos on the title pages of the books.

Now if you want to be part of this project here are the simple guidelines. And Yes, my friend Nicholas Grabowsky will be contributing his story to both books. So if you are not in the first book but in the second you will be in there with NICK! Stay tuned for the title and the cover! This is going to be so much fun!

Okay boys and girls this is for all of you who have expressed a desire to be a part of my Halloween Anthology and those of you who are still thinking about it.

I have been asked what are the guidelines. Well the guidelines are simple. I love the KISS method. All I ask is that you write from the heart. Yes, I do accept previous published work. Yes you do retain the rights to your work, you can put it anywhere else you choose, Yes, I do accept writers who have never been published. Yes we are putting poems as well as short stories in the book. The max length is 3000 words or 20 pages give or take. I am not going to beat you up if it is much less than that or a bit over. I have one story that is only 450 words. I cannot take extreme erotica for a couple of reasons, one I personally am not comfortable reading it and second remember we are reaching a very wide audience other than that reach down and write.

I will not turned down any writer who wished to contribute. The reason is simple people have been good to me over the years they have given me support and a hand up. I can not repay them I can only pay it forward. So that is what I am doing. If this jumps starts someone who has had a dream to write and didn’t know how to get started this is your chance. If you are published and want more exposure this is your chance.

The recompense is this. You each will receive two free books which comes to about $40.00 then you will have the ability to order any amount of books at any time that you want to either sell or give away at my cost. Any money that you make off those books is yours. This is always another way for you to get yourself out there.

Now to add to this my friend Nicholas Grabowsky who most of you might know about – has agreed to write a story for the book (s) (if we have enough writers we will be doing two books and his story will be in both of them)
He will be promoting the daylights out of this little jewel (s) and he will post them on his bookstore page as well as taking them to conventions and cons.

If you don’t know who this wonderful author is let me introduce you to him. He is the one who made Michael Myers famous in the Halloween movies. Yep that is the one and the same – go to his page and friend him as well as his website – he also owns his own publishing house and he has some wonderful horror authors there.

This is such an opprotunity on so many levels.
the Submission deadline is September 20 so that I can publish it before the Spooky Season (my favorite Holiday)
Don’t let it pass you by.
Oh and if you have never written horror step out of your comfort zone and try it.

Things Are Not Always as They Seem and Sometimes a Title is Just a Title!

I know the title makes one scratch one’s head and go “What?” In this day of “political correctness also known as stupidity” we have become so busy worrying about “offending” that we have forgotten how to have fun. We are so busy reading things into sentences, phrases and titles that we have forgotten how to look beyond the words –

Now let me explain for those of you who are still scratching your head. When someone calls me a “Bitch” am I offended? Oh no, I laugh at them, there are a couple of reasons for one I am not a female dog and two I can be and many times am opinionated, overbearing, domineering and can be stubborn. So in that case yes I am a Bitch if that is the way they are using the word. See word’s are just letters strung together to form words which form sentences which form titles to books and other things. I have seen many titles to books and movies that when I got into them were not what I thought they were based on the title by taking it literal. We cannot take things so literal we get in trouble every time. It is like assuming! We all know what that means.

Now that I have that out of the way let me get to the reason for this particular blog. I am only going to address this once so pay attention! I am putting out an anthology of horror yes horror it just so happens that it is coming out during the Spooky season. My favorite Holiday. I also know the real reason behind Halloween and it has nothing to do with ghosts – goblins or devil worship etc. That is for another day.

Anyway the title of my lovely little Anthology is Satan’s Holiday. I have been criticized for this title because it was not politically correct. To that I say horse rubbish. It is a string of words formed to make a book title. No two people will take it the same way. Sort of the same thing that happens at an accident no two people see the same thing even though they are at the same accident. So for the sake of those of you who have a closed mind let me just break it down for you.

Nowhere in the book are there any stories that include Halloween as such. Sure there are ghosts, hauntings, graveyards and things that go bump in the night. However, that happens all the time. Nowhere is the Devil mentioned (though I could write a story about him) in fact one could say that Satan took a Holiday and left all the others to have fun in his stead. See how that works out maybe he was tired and needed a rest.

This is what I mean when I say words are just words. They mean absolutely nothing except in our minds and sometimes those minds are a scary place to be.

As most of my readers already know I have no comfort zone, I write what I feel, that is why I never run out of material to write about unlike many authors. Second most of my readers know that I do not care what the perception of a few people is about my work. That becomes their problem. I love words and I love playing with words, I refuse to be placed in a box simply because others refuse to be open minded.

I have to add here that my book designer’s son is the one who came up with the title and he is only 13 years old. He got it!

So with all of that being said, try very hard to have an open mind if you don’t you will miss out on some wonderful fiction and poetry by writers and published authors in this little jewel. Life is too short to take so seriously! Broaden your horizons! Join us as we let Satan take a Holiday!!!

How Many of You Know Who Nicholas Grabowsky is?

For several years I have had the honor and pleasure of being able to call Nickolas Grabowsky one of my most wonderful friends.  Yes, I know you are saying so what. Big Deal. But you see boys and girls I bet most of you have no clue who this wonderful human being and author is. See I told you that you didn’t know him. So let me just sit you down and introduce you to the boy. Starting with a bit of history. That history goes all the way back to the Horror Films Halloween. You know the ones with all the numbers behind them – the ones that starred Michael Myers. Yeah, that one. Okay now I have your attention. Nicholas was the person behind Michael Myers- he was the one who made Myers famous. That’s right behind every successful person is someone who makes them famous. Nicholas is that person.   Yes indeed the one and only. This same wonderful person has continued with his love of horror and things that go bump in the night by setting up his own publishing house. Yes, it gets even better. He publishes some of the best horror authors around.  He has also written some of the best horror around right up there with the Stephen Kings of this world http://www.amazon.com/dp/0984213635 Nick   The Everborn is just one of his many horror goodies. Nick also have his own website and bookstore filled with things that go bump in the night. I know you all are just dying to get your bloody little hands on them  http://www.downwarden.com/ and just when you thought it couldn’t get any better he is on facebook and loves getting new friends https://www.facebook.com/nicholas.grabowsky Now all that isn’t even the best part he and a few of his evil minions have just put together a book to beat all horror books. He has put together an anthology filled with things to creep you out, to keep you up at night and to stop you from walking down dark alleys. Oh yes indeed- the master of horror has gathered his minions and put together an explosion of such horror that you will be thrilled to death to read. (did you like that play one words?) The book is Titled “Read Us or Die” – Sounds like a thrill ride to me. Now that you are well armed with an over load of information there is no need to NOT to hunt my friend down and buy his books, his authors books and tout his name all over the place. You won’t be sorry and you will be scared happy. I know that is an oxymoron but it works. Oh and as just as side note, Nick will be in my upcoming anthology for Halloween along with many more authors and writers. If we have enough we will be released two books and yes Nick’s story will be in both. So see there is not reason not to get on board with the Horror Train. It is coming and it coming for you!!!!!! The Very First Review for When Fates Collide Arm Candy is in!

In my morning mail I found the very first review for When Fates Collide Arm Candy the third in the When Fates Collide series I co-write with Andrea Dean Van Scoyoc. It was a nice beginning to my week. The series was born when Andrea decided that we needed to co-write with each other. We each drew on our experiences. She at the time worked in an office and was bored out of her mind, I on the other hand, had been a bounty hunter before moving to Florida.

It was a match made in Heaven so to speak- two women who are polar opposites came together to create something so funny that we put disclaimers in the front of the book. That disclaimer is we are not responsible for soiled clothing as the reader reads the books.

When Fates Collide Arm Candy takes the reader on a ride of all rides- The fun starts at the first page and doesn’t stop until the end.

Here is the review from a reader by the name of Cynda Crance I will let her tell you in her words her reactions:

“Just finished reading When Fates Collide, Arm Candy by Yvonne Mason and her co-writer Andrea Dean Van Scoyoc. The characters are colorful and full of adaptability to the ever changing pursuits they use to capture the bad guys. A fast moving, captivating, and enjoyable book to read.”

If you haven’t yet picked up this little book you need to – but you might want to read the first two before – When Fates Collide, When Fates Collide Mardi Gras Bound and you dont’ want to forget The Pink Canary as we bring some of the unique characters from that book into When Fates Collide Arm Candy.

Thank you Cynda for this review.

The Reviews Are Coming in for The Pink Canary

The Pink Canary

Yes the reviews are beginning to roll in. It appears this is another hit. This little jewel has just been released and already it is selling like crazy. “There are bodies piling up in Key West…. Serial Killer? The bodies showing up outside a famous drag bar….is that a clue or a coincidence? A book that delves into the Life of a Drag Queen and a marvelous “Who done it?” Clever! Let’s go into their world of Mascara and Stiletto Heels and observe. Who could be killing all these gay men and why?

Yvonne Mason is the master, or mistress, of mystery in this rip roaring, fishnet stocking twisiting comedy mystery tale. This story could very well could have really happened as Yvonne Mason connects this story with some undisputed truth and history of NYC underworld and the “World Famous 82 Club”… it just might have happened, see for yourself…

The local detectives and cops go on a case that has been haunting the head detective and the main character since their days in the Big Apple. Does the detective has a love/hate relationship with the Drag Queen or is it a lot less Hate and more Love than admitted? Exciting and Hilarious! Who will be next on the list of murder?

The story is as seen through the main character’s eyes and what eyes they are! Lou the mild mannered detective by day and Lola a FABULOUS drag queen by night who can get into all kinds of trouble!! How her friends try to help her find the killer and catch the monster behind these unspeakable murders.

I have been a Drag Queen for over 40 years and this is the first time I have been asked to collaborate on a book. Drag Queens are my speciality and I have worked in Cabaret shows since 1968 as well as extensively in Musical Theater, Television, Radio and Films. I really was excited and honored to help with the book and this book was an ultimate thrill for me.Thanks toYvonne Mason for her faith in me, and for having the insight to choose me to help her navigate this drag queen world. Thanks to Peter for his energy and Marvolous Wit…We will always be connected with this superb Book!”

A terrific (dare I say FABULOUS read). I thoroughly enjoyed it. Love the way it also gives the details about drag and the NY info. It roped me in from the get-go and kept me in until the very end. A absolutely delightful MUST read.

This review is from: The Pink Canary (Kindle Edition)

The Pink Canary is the latest in the eclectic collection of books written by Yvonne Mason. She can take any subject and make it interesting to the reader. This latest work of fiction has two characters based on real people but the action and laughter are pure fiction. It is a great read and for anyone who loves drag or drag queens it is a must read.

This Reader Gets It!

Those of you who read this blog on a regular basis may have read the post I wrote yesterday about the person who didn’t take the time to read When Fates Collide but thought it necessary for whatever reason to slam us. Of course I used that comment and turned it around to my benefit. Today I say this review by someone who has read the book and gets it. The review speaks for itself so no other comments are necessary except to say thank you EW Bradfute for this wonderful review.

Let me say, I appreciate knowing what kind of Author wrote the book. Knowing that Andrea is an Award Winning Best Selling author tells me her work will meet my expectations and knowing that Yvonne is a Bounty Hunter she will be able to give reality on the crime portions instead of that CRAP we are fed on a regular basis. These two are the PERFECT pair for such great books.

Not only am I proud of their works I am also proud to have a copy in my hands! Well worth the read!

If You Don’t Have Balls Enough to Post Your Name Then Don’t Post A Review

Today on Barnes and Noble I found this little ditty post on a book I co-wrote with Andrea Dean Van Scoyoc. The Book when Fates Collide is the first in a series of books we write. When I first read this nasty little comment I had to read it twice- Here is the comment for your reading pleasure and below it I will rebut the absurdity of the comment:

Anonymous

 Sample Review Only

The authors would do their potential readers a great service if they spent less time self-promoting how wonderful they are and instead focus on what is more important than themselves – the book. The book summary should be just that but again the reader is told exactly how they are going to feel reading this novel and once again, it reiterates how wonderful the writers are. There wasn’t much story to read in the sample as it contained long dedications and another overview of how great the book was from one of the writers.

Now Boys and Girls let’s start with the very first thing that caught me eye. The author of this little nasty comment didn’t have the balls to give their name they used the name of  “Anonymous”. Seriously! Who names their child that? And second of all if you have balls enough to make such nasty comments you should have a big enough pair to post your name. Not hide behind “Anonymous”. That certainly does not lend credence to your statement.

Next  and I love this statement, it just goes to show this idiot has not clue about writers or artists in general. “The authors would do their potential readers a great service if they spent less time self-promoting how wonderful they are and instead focus on what is more important than themselves – the book”. We as authors must sell ourselves first. That is written in writing 101. If you don’t sell yourself or have enough confidence in yourself, you can not sell your work. Apparently the person “Anonymous” doesn’t understand that, because they didn’t have enough confidence in themselves to even post their real name to their comment so how can they sell the comment.

Okay moving on to the next one.

“The book summary should be just that but again the reader is told exactly how they are going to feel reading this novel and once again, it reiterates how wonderful the writers are. There wasn’t much story to read in the sample as it contained long dedications and another overview of how great the book was from one of the writers.”  Seriously this is all you could bring to the table.  Here is the “Overview” of the book as it is listed on B&N:

Overview

Alex Morgan is a bounty hunter. Hope Harrington is a woman with no life. Combine the two of them and you have one of the most tongue-in-cheek and hilarious mysteries ever written!

Best seller and award winner Andrea Dean Van Scoyoc and critically acclaimed author and real life bounty hunter Yvonne Mason have teamed up to give their readers one heck of a good time.

With a flair for the comical, and a wit and way that only these two talents could provide, the readers better hold on for their lives because this journey is just beginning!

Alex Morgan has lost her jumper…a master of disguises…and tracked him to Tampa Bay where he has assumed the name of Hope Harrington.
Mistakenly trying to arrest Hope, the blunt and traveled bounty hunter finds that she has been outwitted again and the under appreciated receptionist finds herself in the midst of one melee she could have never dreamed of. Where Hope never had a life before, she finds herself getting ready to have one…and one of non-stop action at that!
Alex’s reputation and a big stash of money are at stake and she’s losing precious time. From Tampa to Key West Alex, with an eager Hope in tow, are going to track down the jumper and that is when the hilarity and adventures ensue!

Told entirely in the first person, this book WHEN FATES COLLIDE is the first of what will be one of many in the Morgan and Harrington mystery series, this is one book not to be missed!
When Fates Collide can currently be found on Lulu.com and Amazon.com
It can also be purchased at Ms. Mason’s online bookstore at http://thebookattice.ecrater.com along with her other great novels.

Please tell what you did not understand about the story line? Did you take a nap while reading it?  Yes, we explained to the reader it was a comedy because both of us are dark writers. None of our readers have ever read anything comedic from us before. We stepped our of our comfort zone and DARED do something different. Get over it! Nobody said you had to buy the book. Apparently you wanted your fifteen minutes of fame. You got it. Thank you for helping us to sell more books!

For those of you who have never read either Andrea Dean Van Scoyoc or myself before this is an opportunity for you to see a side of us that we didn’t even know existed. Both of us are dark writers she writes horror and I write crime and true crime. This was a fun book that we did via email and it took on a life of its own. The second book Mardi Gras Bound  is also available.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled program- To Anonymous there are several things you should learn before you try to write a review. First have balls enough to post your name. Second know what the hell you are talking about. Third at least read the book before you go spouting off about things you know nothing about. Remember “Tis better to be thought a fool  than to open your mouth and remove all doubt!” You just removed all doubt.
