My Books, writing tips and reviews

Justice for Cindy

I wanted to bring all of you up to speed on what is coming down the pike for you to read. I have been working on a new true crime. This has been a challenge. Not because of the lack of research, but because it hit so close to home. The book is titled Justice for Cindy. The back story is Cindy was married to a man who was a narcissistic psychopath who over a 14 year period abused her mentally, emotionally and physically. In the end he executed her while she slept. And that was not all he did. After he disposed of the body he filed a missing person report two days later – the same day he filed the report he moved another woman and her young child into his house. This woman slept with him in the same bed where he had executed his wife –
This book is very challenging to write, not because I do not have the research, I have it. But because after he was caught and confessed he only served 10 years for this murder. When he was released he committed another crime on a family member that was beyond words.
Those of you who have read my true crimes know that I do not sugar coast the book. The story is told in all of it’s horror. Some of you cannot handle it and think it is poorly written. I do not talk about her favorite color, where she went to school, who her boyfriends where or any of the other normal stuff. That is not her story. Her story is what happened to her and why. Her story is there was no justice for her because of the liberal criminal justice laws in the state of Oregon. Her story is because there was no justice for her, the murderer was allowed to be set free after only 10 years in the penal system and when he was released, he committed another crime what was just as heinous. Because he had gotten away with murder- he knew he could continue his life of crime. Not only did he destroy Cindy and her family he destroyed another family.
I advocate for women in domestic violence relationships all the time. I am a survivor of one. I know firsthand what happens and why it happens and how subtly it happens. I know how many women are killed each day in a domestic violence relationship- I was lucky.
Cindy sadly became a statistic. Please watch for the release of this book – share it talk about it and understand at any time a woman can and does become a victim in more ways than one. Many become statistics

4.0 out of 5 starsWell thought out characters and mixing in real-life historical references.
By tenebraerick on February 16, 2016
Format: Kindle Edition
It is plain to see that Yvonne Mason knows crime. A graduate in Criminal Justice and a licensed bounty hunter, you can tell all the research that went into writing this book. She takes the infamous events of Whitechapel in 1888 and puts a interesting spin on the legend of Jack the Ripper. This book reads like one of those movies I used to watch as a kid from International Pictures or even the old Hammer Films of the ’60’s. Kudos to Yvonne for writing a story with well thought out characters and mixing in real-life historical references to make this novel a treat. The ending has just enough mystery to keep you guessing long after you finished it.

The Mad Hatter took over four years to complete. It was very important that the history of 1888 in Whitechapel be correct. I even purchased maps of Whitechapel in that time period. I purchased books on clothing, furniture, mercury poisoning, tanning, hats, money, the hat factory that was on the Thames, bridges and behavior- as well as many other details. I download photos of buildings of that time period, and I also went back to the research I had done when I was in College on Jack the Ripper. I basically drove myself nuts to make sure that the setting was as it should be for 1888 in the East End of London. Apparently it paid off. This reviewer understood what I was trying to do.
It was totally worth all of the rewrites the sleepless nights and the hair pulling to get it right.

Amazon Has Silent Scream For Prime Members at A Huge Discount

for updated cover front2

For those of you who do not know Silent Scream is one of my true crime books. It is the story of the victims of Gerard Schaefer Florida’s first serial killer. I just went on Amazon and Found out that Amazon is selling the book not the download for 8.44 to their Prime members. That is less expensive than the download. So if you are a prime member or have been considering becoming one. Now is a good time. You can get Silent Scream for 8.44 vs the 19.99 it normally sells for. I don’t know how long Amazon will be running this special so if you are interested to hesitate is to lose. I have added the link for your convenience. http://www.amazon.com/Silent-Scream-Yvonne-Mason-ebook/dp/B001JQLT1I/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1445432099&sr=1-3&keywords=yvonne+mason
I will agree this book is not for everyone. If you expect fluff or if you expect to read what school the victims went to or their favorite song or color or clothes, then you will be disappointed – This book talks about the horror of the deaths, what happened, how they happened and why they happened. It also is written backwards, in other words it is written from the time Schaefer was arrested for assault – So if you are thinking Ann Rule or any of the other true crime writers that write a sanitized story then please do yourself a favor DON”T BUY this book. You will not be happy. (That is my public service announcement for the Day) You have been forewarned.
However, if you want to read with an open mind and want to know what really happened to nine of Schaefer’s victims and can handle the facts and wish to honor the girls then by all means order this book.

IT’s Coming

mad hatter

Yes, it is coming. You know The Mad Hatter. This morning I received a very nice review from Andrea Dean Van Scoyoc who is the Host for The Dark Apostle Host of The Dark Apostle’s Bewitching Hour Internet Show.

She like me loves the dark side of life. You have to check out her show on https://www.facebook.com/The-Dark-Apostles-Bewitching-Hour-1482721908692803/timeline/ She post a new episode every Friday Morning. Okay now that the love is out of the way.

Here is what I found in my inbox this morning. What a way to start my week. I had sent it to Andy to beta read it for me. Needless to say she fell right into the story. So without further delay, here is her take on a piece of English History that was not all roses.

“A terrible and delightful twist on a torrid mystery, one of the most infamous in history…has been reborn in a new and even darker fashion.
Yvonne Mason takes us down different avenues and springs new surprises on her readers with this chilling legend.
Read carefully, immerse yourself…and test your sleuthing skills.
Will you make it out…will you figure it out, or will you become yet another victim?”
Andy Van Scoyoc
The Dark Apostle
Host of The Dark Apostle’s Bewitching Hour Internet Show

You see boys and girls and creatures of the evil night. My story is about a Hatter in 1888 in England. And those of us who love all things dark, we all know what was happening in 1888 in Whitechapel. But the reader must ask himself one question- are they the same person? I will leave it for you to decide once you read the story.

This lovely little book is currently at the publisher and will soon be released

Funny How Fiction Becomes Fact Simply Because It Is Carried by Word of Mouth

I know you all are scratching your head wondering where in the world I am going with this. Let me give you a bit of a backstory. This morning I was going through my email and saw where I had received a friend request on facebook. So I checked out the person who sent the request and the first thing I saw was a posting from another page. The posting had to do with a Park in Port St Lucie called Oak Hammock Park. The park in the early 1970’s and 1980’s did not exist, it was just a canal known as C-24 canal. This canal sits on the Martin Co. St Lucie Co line and was the scene of a torture and execution of two of Florida’s first serial killer’s victims. These were the last two victims, but they were not found for several years after the crimes were committed. In fact only parts of them were found due to decomposition and the scatterings of their body parts from animals feeding off of them. The serial killer was Gerard Schaefer, the victims were Paulette Goodenough and Barbara Ann Wilcox.
Now, here is what caught me ire- yes I said ire. My husband and several of his investigators worked this crime. One of them Rick McIlwain worked the C-24 canal crime as it was called back then. They all knew Schaefer had killed these two girls but they didn’t know where the bodies were until the bones were found by some local fishermen.
Now fast forward to today’s post. There is a page about supporting ST Lucie Co and the things that one can do here, it includes what is now OAk Hammock Park. Which by the way is a beautiful park. In this park is a huge Oak tree that now has the urban legend attached to it. IT is known as The Devils Tree. No the victims were not killed at that tree but legends being as they are… well you know the rest.
There were several comments about the tree, the park and what really blew me away was a guy who said he was a paranormal investigator said that no one was killed in that area. That is was made up and that he knew it because he could not find any stories. Really?! Apparently he didn’t look hard enough. My book Silent Scream is all over the place. I have been on Investigation Discovery’s Show Most Evil the segment Sexual Deviants , the local newspaper not only did an article they did a video, my blog talks about the victims all the time.
There were some other comments that were made by others who did not really understand that yes a crime was committed there- I very bad crime and two young lives were stolen.
for updated cover front2

They were just two of the nine to thirty five young girls and young women who were killed by Schaefer. As I researched this book, I grew very close to the victims- I am very protective of their memory. I tend to get a bit protective of them even after all these years. You see there was no one to give them a voice. They were forgotten until the book was written. The investigators who worked the two crimes scenes here in ST Lucie Co were forever changed. The investigators who worked the other six cases were forever changed –
So knowing all of this first hand and having the research in my possession- maybe some of you can get an understanding how personal this became. And they remain close to me and how it is so disrespectful of them as victims to make comments about something that one knows nothing about.
I understand that everyone loves a good ghost story and everyone loves to be scared. However, that being said, one must remember that behind every “ghost” was once a person.
Please respect their memory. Please understand that at one time they were loved by family and friends, they had a future, they lived and then their lives were stolen by pure evil.

An Excerpt from Silent Scream

for updated cover front2

This is an excerpt from Silent Scream. It is one of Schaefer’s writings that he said was fiction. However, it is not fiction, it is the confession of the brutal torture, and murder of one of his victims. IF you want to know which one you have to read the book. Gerard Schaefer was more than a monster. There is no word to begin to describe this man and the evil he perpetrated. If you have not yet watched Most Evil on the Investigation Discovery Channel you need to- watch for it on your TV Listings. It has played several times and will play again. If you have watched it- then this excerpt will make sense to you.

“I was absolutely smitten by this sexy whore. She was lively, intelligent, and had a sensuous figure. I was enchanted. I wanted our assignation to be special. I went right out and bought her a brand new rope. I knew she’d look exquisite swinging at the end of it. I took great care in selecting it. As the date approached, I called her to confirm our evening together. I instructed her on what to wear. I wanted to see her in pink and black. She had long blonde hair fixed in ringlets that would look so nice against a
black evening dress. Black heels and stockings with a garter belt. Pink bra and panty. A frilly brief. She assured me she’d look her best for me. Never before had I been so taken with a whore. I was furious. She was seducing me, and I was helpless before her daunting sexuality. She would have to suffer for that. Yes, suffer. I drove out to Davie and purchased an excellent horsewhip. I’d put her to the lash before hanging her! She’d pay for her seduction!”

A New Review for Silent Scream

for updated cover front2

As most of you may or may not know on Jan 4, 2015 on the Investigation Discovery Channel at 10:00 pm Silent Scream will be the topic of the show Most Evil. This has been seven long years in the making. The victims not only have a voice they now will be seen – There has been much discussion of my book and why I chose to write it the way I did. Those who read it and understood why I applaud you, those who chose to read it with a closed mind- your loss. That being said this review appeared today and I give kudos to the reviewer. I could not state it any better myself. She got it. She understood why.

Silent Scream is not for the faint of heart – nor is it a feel good story- it is a story of pure evil and a story of extreme loss. Gerard Schaefer was an evil monster who only cared about killing and torture.

Here is the review:
“4.0 out of 5 stars Silent Scream by Yvonne Mason, a True Crime Opus, December 29, 2014
By Peg Insula – See all my reviews
This review is from: Silent Scream (Kindle Edition)
Yvonne Mason’s research for Silent Scream is thorough and detailed as she leads the reader through the case from its beginning to its end with the killer’s death in prison. Leaving no stone unturned in gathering information, she includes many photographs and presents writings by the serial killer himself. Every step of the legal process is described as well as the players in it. The nature of the crimes is graphically but sensitively disclosed. The reader gains informed insight into the methods and madness of Gerard Shaefer and begins to grasp and sympathize with the horror faced by his victims.”

Thank you so much Ms. Insula for your understanding and for you ability to read with an open mind. The girls are forever grateful. You understood that is important to try and grasp and sympathize with the horror they faced and the horror of knowing it was the end for them.

I for one am forever grateful.
